Hey guys, so I made a big mistake in my room One Room Challenge Master Bedroom Renovation…well bigg-ish! Crapola! Here’s the lowdown. The ceiling height is super low, like under 8 ft and I wanted to dress up the ceilings and make them a feature. So I came up with the idea to create large boxes on the ceiling, and then have them meet up around the light.
In case you’re new to this project. I’m taking part in a design challenge to make over a room in 8 weeks. This is a reno…check out where we started below!
Big Busy Mistake
K so, once the ceiling trim was up, the fact that you weren’t look up at the ceiling and seeing this square, like you would with a high ceiling just feels WAY too busy. Literally after it was done, I got sick being in the room…like I got such a headache from the intensity of all the angles I had to lay down! Bahahaha ummm ya that’s a sign, you’ve made a wrong turn with the mitre saw!
Making Renovation Lemons in Lemonade
So Tuesday the space was supposed to be painted and our painter cancelled on us, and then cancelled on us again yesterday! Gah! That totally made me mental of course, but on the bright side it gave me pause to say, fuck it, I need to change this.
Fessing Up to My Big Mistake
I worked myself up to have the shameful conversation (lol…it was so cringy!) with my husband’s best friend who is putting the trim up, and said can we extend the large boxes to terminate into the light somehow and remove the inner framed box? This sucks so bad, because it’s time to remove it, mud the ceiling where it was, and then money to buy more of the trim, and replace those ceiling pieces. I have to do it though, because it has been a huge project and if it’s got this big mistake I will be so mad at myself instead of really happy.
Matt Cornies, our carpenter, said it’s ok. He’s so understanding. Bless his heart…I feel so bad…he is super busy and redoing something is like the worst use of time. I hope we can get him back to fix that spot up soon.
Caulking, Filling, Sanding
Omg as you can imagine there were four thousand nail holes and pieces of trim to be caulked. Matt has finished it all except for that inner ceiling detail that needs to be switched out. So i’m hoping we’ll paint next week. We are DYING to get out of my daughter’s room and back into ours…and just to get cleaned up for sure.
Letting me tell you, it’s killing me that I won’t be ready for the big One Room Challenge reveal next week. What could I do though…the room needs to be right in the end. I’ll still have a BIG reveal, I promise, just a little later when my room is done! Is that ok guys?
I’m totally ok with it, because due to Covid restrictions we STILL can’t cross the border and a bunch of my furnishings are being held hostage in Detroit till I can go get them…lol! It’s killing me! I’m putting a desk in front of the big set of windows and that’s one of the pieces waiting in Detroit. We’re going to end up getting it like the day Matt finishes his real estate courses lol…such is life!
Now You See the Big Mistake and I Hope Soon You Won’t!

I wondered about trimming the ceiling. I thought it would only accent the low height and look busy, but hesitated to voice that concern. I now wish I had, as it might have given you pause.

Yes I totally see what you’re saying, it’s tough with such low ceilings for sure…hopefully a compromise with less works out in the end…still not done, unfortunately, so I can’t give you an update, but hopefully soon! Thanks for the message!

I’ve saved myself from a lot of mistakes by simply “photoshopping” before actually doing. Some times my mind thinks something is a good idea, so then I’ll photograph the space and add the detail my brain is thinking (this can be color or trim or furniture). THIS extra step has saved me from a lot of mistakes. Keep going… I know it will look amazing once it’s done. (And I believe you are making the right call, it was kindof claustrophobic in my mind 🙂

Yes that’s a great idea, Tana!…I totally photoshop too, but the angles were so severe with the ceiling height so low I didn’t even know how to free transform in this case the angles were so crazy…it was above my pay grade! lol!! So glad to hear that you agree and hopefully it turns out in the end! oh lord….can’t wait till it’s done!! lol! But great reminder to test things out first!!! Maybe I should have used tape…definitely a test prior for sure!
