You guys, I have been through the process of ordering custom drapery completely from start to finish ONLINE and the results I have achieved are nothing short of Instagram-Pro-Designer-Drool-Worthy! I have the same drapes from the same place as the most gorgeous homes featured in all the magazines, and I’m sharing the entire process with you in this post, so you can get them too! Custom drapery needs to be a part of your home and here’s how to order perfect custom drapery online without having to leave the house (since we can’t right now!)
Doubts We Have About Ordering Custom Drapery Online (that I know you’re thinking!)
- I can’t order something really and truly “custom” online, can I?
- I don’t know how to measure for custom drapery, will they teach me?
- Will custom drapery really make that much of a difference to my space that I should devote an actual portion of my home build/reno budget to drapery?
- I’m not spending this kind of money without talking to a real person EXPERT who can walk me through this, is there a trustworthy expert who is going to walk me through this, if I need that?
- How will they ship something like that to me, will it arrive ready to hang and wrinkle free? And the rods, they are so long? Can you easily ship all that?
- How will I order the right drapery, can they promise it will be exactly like the photos I see in magazines?
The answer to every single one of those questions is HELL YES! And really when you get right down to it, the even better answer to all those questions is Q Design. The only place that can confidently shout hell yes to all your questions is Q Design.
Ok now I’ll share my full story about how the Custom Drapery Online process works!
How I Found Q Design
I knew the look that I wanted for my drapery from photos that I had seen on Instagram and Pinterest in my favourite bloggers’ and designers’ homes. I wanted the gorgeous white drapery with perfect pleats and brass drapery rings hanging so beautifully tailored in each photo. The spaces that felt so finished, and warm, and inviting. I wanted that drapery! The kind of drapery that you can only get when it’s oh so custom!
Luckily, I knew from reading the sources and seeing the tags on Instagram that all my favourite designers were getting their drapery from Q Design . So that is where I started. I sent an email to the owner Lindsay and I started the process.
Ordering Custom Roman Shades Online
My custom drapery journey actually began at our last home with two roman shades that I ordered online from Q Design. One for our kitchen and one in our bathroom. Both window coverings needed to let in all the light, but stop all the views from outside because we lived right on Main Street in a super busy spot!

Taking Your Measurements is Easy, I Promise!
We were given a drapery measurement handout with the most specific measurements to fill out and asked to provide photos for tricky areas to make sure that everyone was on the same page. What’s amazing is, you don’t need to choose the length of your drapery, they choose the perfect length for you based on the measurements of your home (ceiling, moulding, windows, etc.) but you’re not having to know at what height to hang a rod to get the right length. You just take the measurements of the space, so there is no guess work on your part.
Deciding On Fabric and Details with Expert Design Advice
Next I got expert advice from the owner and maker Lindsay about which fabric and pleats that I was seeing in the photos that I loved.
Lastly, I chose my hardware and all the measurements were done for me.
Ordering, Shipping, Delivery, Installation
I placed my order with so much confidence and when the drapes arrived they were wrapped in linen bags and when you took them out there was zero creasing and there were really detailed installation instructions (specific to me) and when I had a question, Q Design answered it literally immediately- their customer service is unmatched, in my opinion.

These are the details you’ll need to pick for your drapery, I’ve included my choices and photos of each detail.
The Pleat: 6″ 2 fold pinch pleats
Fabric: Cozy Linen in the colour Polar with cotton lining
The Drop (Drapery Length): Kissing the floor
Hardware: 1 3/8″ Satin Brass Rod with knob finials

would the cozy linen be a little lighter if they weren’t lined? are they breezey with the lining? I want a somewhat sheer linen drape for our coastal home
Yes, changing the lining would definitely change things. I would ask Lindsay the owner her opinion and to show you some photos with different linings/fabrics. She has a lot of examples of drapery that she’s done and would know exactly what to do to achieve the look you want!
