Our coastal family room reveal is here! I rolled the dice when I decided to change up the furniture layout at the last minute from something traditional to going with two sectionals and, spoiler alert, I freaking love it…could not LOVE our new coastal family room with two sectionals more…having this new space is life changing for our family, you need to see this!
Disclosure: This post is sponsored by The Brick. As always, all of the opinions here are my own.
In case you’re new to our Lakehouse reno, we have been bringing this 1922 Cape Cod back to life for 2.5 years and this is the last big space inside and man, do I feel like we saved the best for last! I say “inside” because right now we are doing the exterior…so a few more reveals coming!
This space began as pretty dark and dated, and the power of paint and dream furniture, turned it into a cozy, coastal dream, where we all love to hangout! I can’t believe we survived all of Covid with just two love seats in our living room…now we are living the good life people, let me tell you! lol!! Keep reading, to see the before shot of the space!
Why I Chose a layout with Two Sectionals
Originally, I had been thinking of having one sectional on the wall under the prints and then having the wide Cody cabinet against the window wall with two chairs in front of it. I have two daughters, so the more I thought about the four of us all hanging out, I pictured a battle for the dreamy chaise on the sectional. My girls are in a fight-over-everything phase, and I thought, I wish we could just put two sectionals in here. I started thinking about it more and more, and it solved so many problems. Specifically the fireplace isn’t centred in the room and it would make the space we do have feel a lot larger and more usable. So I decided to go for it! I just can’t say how much we love having so much comfortable functional seating and it’s perfect for guests because everyone is facing each other. When I shot this reveal, we didn’t have a T.V. yet, but now we do and it sits on the cabinet where the arched mirror is in the photo below. It works really well there.
Optional Matching Ottoman
You can actually order a matching ottoman for the sectional, which would create another chaise and be super comfortable for everyone to be able to stretch their feet out. I’d love to add that piece one day.
The Brick Gena Sectional Review
Comfort
This Gena Sectional is insanely comfortable. I’m shocked at how comfortable, because I didn’t even know a sectional could actually be this comfortable. I just said comfortable 3 times- now a fourth…I clearly need a thesaurus but I just had to say it that many times because we are so happy with how….I won’t say it again! but it is! I was initially concerned with the pillows not being attached to the sofa but they are really large and substantial and completely stay in place. I don’t have to pouf anything or rearrange anything whatsoever, everything stays looking just like it does in the photos.
Style
The Gena Sectional is above and beyond anything I could have hoped for style wise The clean lines and narrows profile arms make them modern while still feeling very transitional. Because this is a historic home and the panelling has the dental moulding, I couldn’t go with something big and boxy, it would not have felt like it fit, but I still needed modern to balance out all the feminine details. That was a seriously tall order and this sectional hits it out of the park. Because it’s so transitional, I can see it working in any space and really adding wow factor.
Colour Options and Fabric
This sectional comes in 3 colours that are all really great options: our is a creamy white called Cotton and it also comes in a navy called midnight, and a Charcoal grey. The navy colour is gorgeous IMO, so if you’re wanting a darker option I would snap that up. I would have gone with navy, if I didn’t do so many accent colours AND if I didn’t love white so so much. I’m so happy with the cotton colour. It’s not easy to find a great looking sectional with clean lines and a great colour too, so the Gena sectional is just 10/10 for me on colour options. The fabric is really soft and super cozy. We had it scotch guarded for stains by having a local lady who’s business is called “Foam Frenzy” come. We’ve done that a couple times now, and it give me great peace of mind.
Here’s a Look at the Before!
We actually closed off that opening which leads to our living room, so that in the main living room we could centre our gas fireplace on the wall with symmetrical bookshelves. I also love that it makes the family room more functional. There is a walkway on the other side of the fireplace that takes you to the kitchen and living room (shown in the photo below).
Console Tables
I feel like I’ve never been this happy with every single part of a space before, and our cabinet and console are no exception…I freaking love them! The consoles are both from the Cody Collection by the Brick. The Acacia wood is gorgeous up close and really solid. The weathered colouring feels like driftwood and works perfectly with our coastal vibes. This piece would transition to farmhouse styling really well, too. This is the Cody TV stand, and it would also make a great credenza or buffet and comes in 3 widths. Ours is the largest at 70″ wide. We just finally bought a T.V. and it sits on here, which I will show you in stories. This piece has tons of storage!
We got the matching Cody Sofa Table for the wall near our entry. I am loving it! The shelves below add so much interest and are easy to style with a few coffee table books. Console tables are my must-have favourite piece to style right now, so if you have some empty wall space use this piece and put a big round mirror over it…that look is everything. I’ve ordered a mirror and once it comes in, I plan to put it here.
Couldn’t resist styling this console a different way!
Coffee Tables
I could not decide on a round or rectangular coffee table. There was enough space for both, so I thought it would be fun to mix and match shapes from the same collection. I am obsessed with The Brick’s Corey Occasional Table collection. They have the most clean lines and modern coastal feel, and the shelves below look really great styled. I styled our rectangular Corey coffee table with an antique printer’s tray that I filled with shells that the girls collected at the beach, and it’s become such a focal point in the space. Whenever people come over it’s the thing they comment about and say that they have a shell collection they want to display too!
Underneath the round Corey coffee table, I have a basket full of beach glass and a beach hat.
Something about being on the lake makes you want to collect things! I have a huge driftwood collection, and I’ve decided to collect straw hats this summer, to do one of those beach hat galleries walls. I’m wanting to put it over the Cody console table in the entry, and carry it up the wall…wouldn’t that be so welcoming?!
I almost forgot to tell you the best part about the Corey coffee tables, they have hidden wheels under them that you can’t see unless you looking right under them…it’s amazing! It was the best surprise ever because both my husband and I, love to pull the coffee table right over so we can work with all of our things comfortably spread out. That’s another reason that we needed two coffee tables, we each grab a sectional, pull over a coffee table and work for hours on our side hustles.
End Table
I also got the matching end table, but I ended up styling it as a bedside table. I love the look so much that I’d love to get a second to have a matching pair. I love it as an end table too, so you’ll be seeing it styled that way as well!
Coastal Family Room Paint Colours
The big changes came from painting out all the wood white, painting the ceiling a beautiful dusty blue/grey, and then the upper portion of the walls in green. The addition of all the colours has really made the space feel like a summery lakehouse. I’ve often stuck to just white walls, but this space with all its panneling and beams was begging me to accentuate it with colour. I’m so unbelievably happy that I did! All paint colours are listed at the bottom of this post under sources.
New Windows in our Coastal Family Room
We actually just replaced the windows in this space last week, and will be replacing the door in the next weeks with a full glass door, so I’ll be sharing the space again with the new changes, or you can head to my story this week to see them too. I’ll also be adding new window coverings in here which will add another layer of softness and texture! I’m a little nervous about the glass door because I’ll have to be pretty clean and style the porch, but I do love a good reason to style a new space, and the window coverings will probably be the perfect solution for that too.
