I’m freaking out because over the past four months we have totally transformed every inch of our master bedroom and it is not only done at last but it turned out so romantic, calming, functional, airy, bright, feminine and every detail has been considered to create the perfect dream master bedroom!!! So now I can share with you exactly how to create the perfect dream master bedroom for yourself in 7 steps! Ok here goes!!
Disclosure: This post is sponsored by The Brick. As always, all of the opinions here are my own.
1) A Layout with A Focal Point
The first thing that I did to radically change the vibe of our master bedroom was to totally reconsider the layout! If you remember my old blah bedroom (pictured below) the bed was on a completely different wall. I never considered the wall I moved the bed to now because the windows were there, but with some creative maneuvering, I made the windows into a backdrop! Now we can house so much more furniture and the space feels so balanced, harmonious, and my fav SYMMETRICAL!
This bedroom was such a challenge to rethink because there is so much stuff on every freaking wall…windows, 2 exterior doors, a closet door, entry door, and a gigantic radiator! Yup not a single free wall whatsoever. So if I can make this space feel balanced and spacious, so can you! You just need to throw out any preconceived notions of where things “should” go like usually the way it was when you bought the house and instead think, “what will give me the best focal point?!”.
The focal point in your bedroom should be the bed and it should be what you see opposite you when you stand in the doorway, whenever possible. I totally thought, nope can’t do it with this room and lived that way for almost 2 years until I thought…this space feels so unbalanced and like a hot mess- I’m trying something new…what if I put the bed right in front of the windows?! and Boom!
2) Dream Bedroom Colour Scheme: White and Mixed Metals
I knew from the start that this space needed to be calming and that I wanted to decorate without colour. I wanted it to be perfect for a photoshoot since it’s now a vacation rental that is designed for Bride’s on their wedding weekend and fun girls’ weekends away, and romantic getaways. I wanted the space to be the perfect backdrop for anyone’s style. I chose gold and silver as my accent colours.
Trust me it was hard not to add my signature mint and pinks, but all the restraint was worth it because it’s so calming and can allow for any Bride’s bouquet colours and any holiday styling that I want to do. It’s actually inspired a more neutral palette at our new lakehouse reno too!
3) Key furniture Pieces in a dream master bedroom
Upholstered Bed with Footboard
You need a gorgeous and timeless upholstered bed, and I love a footboard! My favourite furniture is tufted (tufted is the button detail). You do not need to break the bank to knock the bed out of the park! I used the Paris Queen Bed from The Brick and it is my favourite style of bed. You don’t even know what an amazing price it is…I’ve linked it here.
Statement Bedside Tables with Mirrors
I love the look of gorgeous bedside tables on both sides of the bed with matching mirrors above. These pieces help to even further strengthen your symmetry and focal point in the room. You can style the tables with big lamps, or in my case some gorgeous ginger jars with fresh blooms cut from our magnolia tree. You can also style them with faux florals, so you can have the eye candy without any maintenance. Faux blossom branches would be really perfect on a bedside table. These cabinets are actually designed by The Scott Brothers from their Scott Living Collection for The Brick. They are called the Reva Accent Cabinet and I’ve linked them here. I love them because of how big they are, the storage they provide, and they are a great height for the bed. And I’m obviously obsessed with the mirrored doors and fretwork mullions!
The mirrors are the perfect shape and size for these accent cabinets and the finish goes really well…total happy accident there! I love that these Atley mirrors have a beautiful arch that feels feminine but modern at the same time. They couldn’t be too ornate because the front of the bedside table is intricate and shouldn’t compete with anything else.
Makeup Vanity
You’re not going to believe this but this vanity isn’t an antique even though it screams, “I’m this perfect one of a kind find!” This vanity was the first piece that I picked out for the space! It was also the last piece to arrive and totally made the room when it was added! My daughters were so jealous that they kept asking if they could have one and I was dying over it too. I have always wanted a place to get ready in my bedroom. It is kind of killing me that I finally got one and now the house is converted to a vacation rental. But can’t you just die picturing a bride getting ready in this room and sitting at the vanity? I can’t wait for that to happen! I also need to get this exact vanity again for our new master bedroom!! Like I can’t live without it now!!
This vanity is the Grace 3-Piece Vanity Set with Lift-Top Stool. Omg, it’s so functional! The middle mirror is a full length mirror, it has a plug built into it so you can plug in your blow dryer and straightner, and then the side mirrors pivot and hold necklaces on the backside…so freaking smart! The drawers are velvet lined…it’s just the best freaking thing ever and I love that it looks like an antique, so it can easily fit in with any decor you have and give your space a more curated look.
Leaner Mirror
A leaner mirror is such a necessary luxury. It’s so awesome to have a huge mirror to get dressed with. The girls are always coming in and checking themselves out. This is the Hampton Mirror.
Dresser
This space doesn’t have a dresser because it’s a vacation rental, but if it did, I would put this one where the leaner mirror is and move the leaner mirror across from the bed.
4) Chandelier with Ceiling Medallion
Well you’re not going to believe this but, we didn’t have overhead lights on the second floor till about 3 weeks ago…and neither did anyone else ever living in this house since 1886! WTF…but at least people do from now on! So like in the morning we had to get ready by the lights of our cellphones…so romantic…NOT! So insane…ok back to the chandelier…
This chandelier was super inexpensive and the medallion …wait for it…my Dad found at the side of the road! Someone was throwing it out! No joke! You can find super inexpensive medallions at your local home depot/Rona type of place. You just glue them to the ceiling with PL then paint them…they are one of my favourite ways to elevate a space. I added one in our living room and you can see that post and my other tips to create a breathtaking ceiling, here.
5) Create A Stunning View! Even when you don’t have one!
I think one of my favourite decor moments in the bedroom are the matching gold frame gallery walls on both sides of the bed. If you’re laying in bed both people can wake up to the most gorgeous dream master bedroom views. The photos are by one of my favourite instagram accounts: @GeorgiannaLane She takes the most incredible photos of Paris, London, and New York, and flowers so many stunning flowers! Her photos just create the most romantic vibe ever! She has hundreds of photos to choose from to create your gallery wall. Some of my favourites in my gallery walls are from her New York prints.
You can shop Georgianna Lane prints here!
Obviously, I also have a pink and mint gallery wall all designed from Georgianna Lane photos, but I couldn’t do it for this space. Instead, I poured over her photos to find the perfect white and gold photos for the room. I tried to have blossoms and blooms in as many photos as possible and I didn’t want them to be too glam, so they could tie into the antique feeling in the room, with our old 1886 white painted floors and stained glass doors.
6) Large Rug to Hold the Room and Keep it Cozy!
Not only is this Momeni rug white, gold, and silvery grey, so it just nails the colour scheme, but it’s my favourite rug of all time. It’s the same rug that we have in our living room. It’s also the same rug that I made our DIY stair runner out of! I might be a little obsessed. It’s just the best rug and looks different in every setting. The size is 9×12 giving you lots of room on the sides and front of the bed.
7) Perfect Drapery for a Steal!
Everyone always notices my drapery and I know why! Here’s the secret: it’s because I hang the drapes with rings instead of directly on the rod! I know, so simple, but so high impact! I can’t afford custom pin tucked drapery and you can’t even tell. I gather the drapery and use drapery clips to cheat the look. This needs to be its own blog post honestly because it’s so high impact on a budget! I searched for the perfect rod finish and used these rods and these drapery clips! The panels themselves are from Homesense…I know crazy right!
Use Drapery to Hide a Door
I can also cheat the fact that there are windows and two doors, once the drapes are pulled shut it just feels like all matching windows and I can have a cohesive bright look and hide the stained glass when I want to. It’s great because I can have an all white space anytime I want for photoshoots and holiday styling.
I hope these 7 tips to create the perfect dream master bedroom help inspire you to make a dream bedroom!
